How to Choose and Buy Barre Equipment

💡 Key points

Barre training combines the elegance of ballet with conditioning workouts. To get the most out of your training, you need the right support: a stable bar, the right height and length, quality materials, and strengthening accessories. This guide is based on our range of portable ballet barres from Dinamica Ballet and includes practical tips for proper setup, dimensions, materials, and maintenance.

How much space do you need?

  • Space per person: a general rule is to reserve about 1 meter of bar length for each person training. This helps avoid crowding and gives enough room for leg movement.
  • Distance between supports: for barre fitness, where body weight is transferred onto the bar, we recommend a maximum distance between uprights of 1.66 m. For classical dance, where students only lightly hold the barre, the distance can be about 2 m.
  • Bar length for home use: for smaller spaces, choose a length up to 2 m; longer bars can flex and are less practical to move around.

Barre dimensions and height

  • Standard height: for most adults, the ideal barre height is 100 – 105 cm from the floor. The Prima model has a fixed height of around 103 cm; height-adjustable models like Juliette offer 12 settings across a 33 cm range, making them suitable for both children and adults.
  • Double bars: if you train with children or in a studio with mixed heights, consider double barres. The Pina model has two bars at 102 cm and 79.5 cm with a 19 cm gap. The premium Maurice has bars at 83 cm and 105 cm.
  • Height-adjustable professional barres: the professional Isa model offers 14 height positions across a 39 cm range, and the double Giselle allows height adjustment for both bars in 20 positions within 70–120 cm. The premium Royale offers 10 positions from 73 cm to 123 cm while maintaining the stability of a fixed barre thanks to 30 kg cast-iron bases.

Choosing models from our range

For home enthusiasts – Prima

  • Lightest and most affordable: the Prima model weighs only 17 kg and is designed to be easy to move. It’s made from professional-grade materials: steel bases and uprights with an epoxy finish and a larch wooden bar (southern yellow pine). Available lengths are 1 m, 1.5 m, and 2 m.
  • Easy assembly: the barre comes in five parts; you can assemble it with a screwdriver and Allen key included in the package.
  • Ideal for home workouts: combined with a mat, light dumbbells, and resistance bands, you’ll have a complete barre fitness setup.

For families and growing dancers – Juliette

  • Height-adjustable: Juliette offers 12 height settings across a 33 cm range, making it suitable for children and adults.
  • Wood and steel combination: a high-quality larch wooden bar and steel bases weighing 6 kg each ensure stability and protect floors thanks to PVC stoppers.
  • Lightweight and portable: thanks to its lower weight and simple assembly, it’s easy to move or store.

For professionals – Avant and Isa

  • Avant (left) – professional stability: a barre with a fixed height of 103 cm. Steel legs and bases provide stability; lab tests have shown pressure resistance up to 400 kg. Available with or without wheels; the wheeled version with a 2 m wooden bar weighs 48 kg, without wheels 32 kg. The larch wooden bar is available in 1.5 m, 2 m, and 3 m lengths.
  • Isa (right) – the most popular height-adjustable barre: 14 height positions across a 39 cm range. Available with wheels (20 kg base) or without wheels (10 kg), with a total weight for the 1.5 m version of 50 kg with wheels or 31 kg without wheels.

For larger groups – Pina and Giselle

  • Pina (double barre) (left image): two bars at 102 cm and 79.5 cm with a 19 cm gap allow children and adults to train at the same time. The wheeled base weighs 20 kg, without wheels 10 kg; total weight with a 2 m bar is 52 kg (with wheels) or 36 kg (without wheels).
  • Giselle (double and adjustable) (right image): both bars have 10 height positions within 70–120 cm, and the gap is 19 cm. The wheeled base weighs 20 kg, without wheels 10 kg; the 2 m version weighs 53 kg with wheels or 34 kg without wheels.

Measuring and installation tips

  1. Sketch it out: mark the bar length and support positions on paper; this helps you determine the exact number of supports and leave a few extra centimeters on each end for a clean overhang.
  2. Mix mounting types: for permanent installations, you can combine supports anchored to the floor and to the wall. When installing opposite a mirror, it’s useful to prepare an opening in the mirror or split it into two sections so the bar can pass between them.
  3. Custom length: we can cut the wooden bar to your project specifications; in that case, delivery time extends by about 3 weeks from order placement.
  4. Installation service: we don’t provide installation for portable barres, but we can recommend verified partners and provide detailed instructions.

Materials and maintenance of wooden bars

  • Larch (southern yellow pine): all our bars are made from certified larch, offering strength, slight flexibility, and a comfortable grip. The wood is smoothly finished and left unvarnished to keep the surface pleasant to the touch.
  • Impregnation and varnishing: we supply the wood in a natural finish, or varnished on request.
  • Regular cleaning: after each training session and at least once every two weeks, clean the wooden bar with neutral soap and a soft cloth. This extends its lifespan and maintains optimal grip.

Accessories for barre training

  • Dumbbells: light weights (0.5–1.5 kg) and high reps help strengthen shoulders and arms. Neoprene hex dumbbells don’t roll and are safer.
  • Resistance loops and bands: textile mini loops with different resistance levels are great for glutes; long elastic bands support stretching, and we recommend storing them in a cool place.
  • Pilates ball: a small ball with a diameter of around 23 cm increases core activation.
  • Sliders: discs for hands or feet that strengthen the core and add variety to your training.
  • Non-slip socks: grip socks improve stability and hygiene during exercise.
